This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
