Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
